Obituary of Edward William Pilwallis

Edward William Pilwallis, 82, of Wilkes-Barre, passed peacefully into heaven on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, while in the comforting care of the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center Hospice Team, Plains Twp. Born on November 14, 1940, in Plains Township, he was a son to the late William and Anna Gritanius Pilwallis. Ed grew up in the Plains area and attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Plains Memorial High School, class of 1958. He then graduated Kings College in 1962 with a Bachelor's degree in education focusing on English and History. Ed moved to Edison, New Jersey where he taught in the Edison School District at the middle school and high school throughout his career. Upon his retirement, he returned to the Wyoming Valley and resided in the Brookside section of the city, where he built his home. Ed was a lifelong member of the St. Francis Lithuanian R.C. Church, Miners-Mills, where he participated in the yearly church bazaars, and the church choir. He was also a member of St. Michael the Archangel Rosary Makers. After the church’s closure, Ed became a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre. Edward was an animal lover and big supporter of no-kill animal shelters throughout his life. He also enjoyed supporting his favorite teams the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies. He couldn’t play sports, but he loved to cheer on his favorite teams. Ed also loved classical music and loved to gift music to others. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, and infant sister Christina. Ed is survived by his significant other Elaine Slabinski, Miners-Mills; cousins Jane Walsh Waitkus and family; Carol Boza; and Joseph Pilwallis; along with his friends and teaching colleagues. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation and Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Saints Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Twp. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until the beginning of Mass at 10:00 a.m. Rev. John Lambert, pastor and celebrant of service. Interment will be held in St. Francis Cemetery, Plains Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the St. Vincent dePaul Kitchen, 39 East Jackson Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA, 18701. Services are in the care of the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., Plains Twp.
