Obituary of Rose Marie Hayes

Rose Marie Hayes, 84, of Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at her home. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Anna Kurzyna Sorokas and Paul Sorokas. Rose was a graduate of James M. Coughlin, class of 1948. Her first job was working in the local cigar factories as a roller and wrapper. Rose left and joined the Wilkes-Barre Police Department. She was one of the first three women to be hired. After a few years on the force, she left and joined Owen-Illinois. After thirty-five years, Rose retired at the age of 62 putting in many years as the stock room supervisor at the Old Boston plant. Rose was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre, and a current member of St. Benedict's Church, Wilkes-Barre. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, and a member of the St. Michael's Archangel Rosary Makers for our troops. She was also a member to the following clubs: the Miner-Mills Community club; the Plains Seniors Citizens Center; Kingston Senior Citizens club; the local crime watch; the Alliance Seniors of America; the Polish American Association; and a longtime volunteer at the John Heinz Center. Rose enjoyed making jewelry and sewing. She would add accessories to all her dresses to make them her own unique design. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in the yard. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister Margie Sorokas; sister Loretta Zavada; and husband Larry Hayes. Surviving are her two brothers, Vietnam era veterans, Paul (Bobo) and Richard Sorokas; daughter Debra Sluzar and son-in-law Phil Sluzar. Viewing will be held Friday, July 24, 2015, at the Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark Street, Plains, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00am from the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am in St. Benedict's Church, Austin Ave. Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be held in Memorial Shrine Park, Wyoming.
