Obituary of George Jay Brooks

George " Jay" Brooks, 46, of the Miner-Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, fought a courageous battle with lung cancer, he succumbed to this illness on Saturday, September 28, in the Commonwealth Hospice unit, St. Luke's Villa, Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on November 11, 1966, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was a son to Karen Cumming Brooks and the late George J. Brooks Sr. George was educated in local schools and continued his education by receiving his GED. George was hired by Schiffs food services as a truck driver. Before long, he became known for his tireless work ethic and his excellent relationships with his customers. His dedication was rewarded as the recipient of 2012 employee of the year award. He continued his service to his clients throughout his treatment never missing a beat. George lived his life for his three girls and "saviors". His fiancé and companion of 18 years Kelly Chmielewski and his two daughters Kayla Lynn "Beaner" and Morgan Mae "Bugaboo" were the apple of his eye and his true source of joy and love. His chief pride in life was his soulmate Kelly whom he shared countless hours of laughter and who assisted him with care for the past 9 months. George's entire life was dedicated to them and they dedicated their life to him. George believed in family, home and that childlike laughter was the key to happiness. He translated his love for movies, cartoons and amusement parks into ways that endeared him to all he met and allowed him to be a second father to many of his daughters' friends. He loved the simple pleasures life had to offer. He considered every neighbor in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre a friend. This was evident in his willingness to assist neighbors & friends with automotive repairs at a moment's notice because as George would say "that's what friends do". George is preceded in death by his father George Brooks Sr. and his step-father Ronald Fenner. Surviving are his mother Karen Brooks, Glen Lyon; daughters Kayla and Morgan Brooks; Wilkes-Barre; son Dylan; fiancé Kelly Chmielewski, Wilkes-Barre; brother Charles Brooks, Glen Lyon; sisters Pamela Gavin, Maryland; and Tina Robinson, Tennessee; his fiancé's parents Rebecca and Roman Chmielewski, Wilkes-Barre; and fiancé's sister Samantha Chmielewski, Exeter. George's life will be honored on Wednesday, October 2, at the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains, with a memorial service to begin at 8:00pm. Visitation hours will be on Wednesday at the funeral home from 6:00pm until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at the funeral home to help with future care of his family, or to the Medical Oncology Associates Prescription Assistance Fund, 382 Pierce Street, Kingston, Pa, 18704.
