Obituary of Rita B. Humko
Rita B. Humko, 77, of Plains Township, returned home to the Lord on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, while in the comforting care of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
Rita was born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, on December 4, 1940. She was a daughter to the late Felix and Hedwig Stabinski Suchoski. Rita grew up in the Wilkes-Barre and Plains area where she attended local schools. She was a graduate of the Sacred Heart High School, class of 1958.
Rita went right to work after graduation to help support her family by working in the local garment industry as a seamstress. She worked in Plains Blouse and Gail’s Clothing Factory and several other factories over the years. Rita was also a member of the I.L.G.W.U.
In 1960, Rita married the love of her life, Walter Humko. Together they raised their five children in Plains Township. Their faith was at the core of their family. Rita was a proud member of the Sacred Heart Parish, Plains, until the church’s closure, and a current member of the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul, Plains.
In 1993, after the garment industry closed, Rita worked in housekeeping at the Nesbitt Hospital and later at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She enjoyed her work, but also the people she was working with made the day special. Rita retired in 2008.
Rita was a lady always on the go. She enjoyed shopping, cooking, and making her favorite pizza and pierogies for family and friends. She cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband Walter; brother Ed Suchoski; and sister Dorothy Burnetski.
Surviving are her children Lee Ann Humko, Moosic; Walter and his wife Yumi, Japan; Karen Humko, Plains Twp.; Ray and his wife Kelly, Hanover Twp.; Christine Savage and her husband Darren, Exeter; grandchildren Walter, Virginia; Lexi, Sophia, and Joshua Savage, Exeter; and Emily Rose Berry, Hanover Twp ;brother John Suchoski, Wilkes-Barre, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to share a special thank you with the staff and nurses at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for taking great care and making Rita’s stay comfortable in her final days.
